 3 Reasons to B an IAP2 USA Mentor!applynow2

  1. You’re a goldmine of information. Share the wealth! – Mentoring is a way to stay grounded. It becomes a gateway for you to access your past experiences, pitfalls, and triumphs. Mentoring can become an exercise in critical thinking in a way that will help you to look at your practice more analytically. Challenging yourself to become a mentor and share your knowledge will give you an opportunity to explore your reflections and pass on better P2 practices.
  2. Stay hip and keep up with the times! – Our world is changing at an exponential rate. We have seen the rise of technology and every day we are surrounded by the force it wields. There is no doubt the upcoming generations we see today are far more tech savvy. Taking on a mentee may mean that you will, in turn, learn some tricks of the technology trade and fortify your own P2 practices.
  3. Change a life, and the industry! – By becoming a mentor you will help set the tone of our industry. For many of us, there is a mentor in our past that helped set the tone and build the foundation upon which we built our career. The personal reward of seeing those positive changes is immense!

3 Reasons to B an IAP2 USA Mentee

    1. Mentors provide a wealth of information – Have ever felt that you are stuck in a professional rut with no viable options, there’s a good chance your mentor has been there. If they haven’t, it is likely they know someone who has. Mentors offer encouragement, but also help set goals and share experiences to help you avoid the sticky situations beginners can make.
    2. Mentors can provide genuine constructive feedback – There is nothing more frustrating than having a project kicked back with the only nugget of feedback being something akin to “needs work.” Mentors can help you see where you need to improve, where you may be blind to it.
    3. Mentors find ways to stimulate our personal and professional growth – Mentors have a way of seeing our faults in such a way that it creates a place for growth and change. Having a safe space to ask questions, make mistakes, and explore new techniques is priceless. They can help you set realistic goals and find ways to make them reality.

IAP2 USA launches the 2016 Mentorship Program – Apply Today

February 1, 2016 Leave a comment

mentoring-coachingIAP2 USA is pleased to announce the 2016 Mentorship Program, starting in March and finishing at the end of November. As some of you might remember IAP2 USA conducted a pilot project in 2015 and we are pleased to let you know that it was a success! The following are some of the comments from our 2015 Pilot Project participants:

“I am exceedingly grateful for the opportunity to have been a mentee in the IAP2 USA Mentorship Pilot program. My mentor both immersed me in new relationships within IAP2 where I could ask and learn and she brought me along with her to get work done that is important to her, and became important to me. The experience shifted me from an observer to a participant in this community and I look forward to rooting and growing here. (Mentee)

“Our profession is changing rapidly – with emerging communication technologies, challenging political contexts, and declining social capacity for addressing controversial issues in a civil manner. As a seasoned professional with over 25 years’ experience, I greatly enjoyed getting to know my mentee and her perspectives on our profession as a relative newcomer in the field. I am certain I benefitted every bit as much from the Mentorship Program as she did! (Mentor)

“The mentorship program is for someone who has a clear understanding of what they want to gain and who is going to be tenacious in making sure that happens. (Mentee)

“This was a great opportunity to get perspective on my development as a practitioner. My Mentor was knowledgeable about so many things and was able to help illuminate parts of my experiences and work that I hadn’t considered. The things I learned through this program have had a significant impact on my plans for the future. (Mentee)

“I participated in this pilot program because at this point in my career, I feel like I have information and experiences to share (the good, bad and the ugly!) and guidance to offer. I love to cheerlead and coach P2 proponents! I enjoyed the candid conversations and the progress I felt we made during our 6 month journey. Would definitely do it all over again. (Mentor)

A NEW program for IAP2 USA – Be a part of the new IAP2 USA Mentorship Program!

April 28, 2015 Leave a comment

IAP2 USA is pleased to announce that we will now be offering our members a terrific professional development opportunity through our brand new Mentorship Program. As this is a new initiative, our first Mentorship session will be a six month pilot project (May-November). We are looking for up to eight mentors and 8 mentees to join us as we create the made-in-USA version of a Program currently being provided by IAP2 Canada. Please think about participating and join us in this exciting opportunity.

The Mentorship Program connects those new to the P2 profession (the mentees) with experienced P2 practitioners (the mentors), who provide a sounding board, advice and general wisdom on best practices and potential pitfalls. The form of the mentoring relationship is determined by the individual pairings, developing their own “Terms of Reference” and framework for the mentorship program.

This program not only provides additional learning and professional development opportunities for those new to the field, but also offers seasoned practitioners the opportunity to live part of IAP2’s Code of Ethics: SUPPORT OF THE PRACTICE. We will mentor new practitioners in the field and educate decision makers and the public about the value and use of public participation.
