IAP2 2013 Presenter Check-In: Colleen Hardwick

As we count down the days to #IAP2NA2013, we thought it would be nice to check in with our speakers and presenters to see what they’re looking forward to at the conference. Enjoy!

Who are you and what do you do?

Colleen HardwickMy name is Colleen Hardwick and I am the Founder and CEO of PlaceSpeak. My mission is advancing public participation by creating online tools that authenticate the consultation process.

What topic will you be presenting on at the conference, and what makes you feel passionate about it?

My topic is “Authenticating Online Consultation”. I am passionate about it because the Internet offers fresh potential to reinvigorate civic engagement and render the online consultation process “real” and “actionable”. Up until now, online consultation has not been verifiable and the results anecdotal. Decision and policy-makers view this input as interesting but until the process becomes authentic, internet consultation will remain a “toy”. Technology now exists to overcome some of most salient pathologies of democratic governance and for us to advance as a society, it is necessary to leverage this opportunity.

Here is a 60 second video I recorded in connection with the upcoming Web Summit in Dublin, IR.

Based on the conference program, what other sessions do you hope to attend (and why)?

I am interested to attend other sessions relating to social media and technology in order to better understand how other practitioners are viewing online communications and future opportunities.
